Natural Resources, Energy and Environmental Law Group

This Group serves our substantial clientele in the oil and gas and power sectors, and our growing clientele in the mining area. Our partners in these areas are widely regarded as some of the top practitioners in Nigeria.

Our partners have experience of supporting major oil and gas exploration and production companies in negotiating production sharing contracts (PSCs), processing applications for leases and licenses, drafting proposed legislation, financing and development of major oil and gas projects and other matters relating to their business in Nigeria.

Our gas experience has naturally prepared us for the prospect of undertaking advisory work to participants in the power sector. We advised one of the world’s largest and most efficient electricity companies which is working very actively to become a major player in the Nigerian power market.

Our natural gas experience includes advising gas project developers on matters involving the development of Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG), fertilizer, gas processing and pipeline projects. One of our most important matters in the recent past was our work as counsel to the NNPC in the due diligence phase of the NGC privatization. This unique experience and the insights gained there from remain un-paralleled by any other law firm in Nigeria today.

Our Environmental Law Group is organized to provide prompt commercial advice to clients across the range of environmental issues from industrial and marine pollution, through waste management and product liability to development control and lender liability. In this rapidly developing area, a key aspect of our service is to forewarn clients of legislative and regulatory proposals of particular relevance to them. Our ability to do this is directly related to our excellent relations with the major environmental regulatory bodies at federal and state level.

Recent major work in this area includes providing legal support to a major international oil company, which suffered an oil spill and from its operations offshore Nigeria as well as conducting an oil-spill verification and assessment exercise in the Niger-Delta. Furthermore, we have been engaged to advice the organised upstream and downstream oil sectors, major players in the oil and gas sectors and ultimately, the Federal government on the implications of a recent comprehensive draft bill on the environment.
